19 South William St.

New York, NY

A 5-story through-the-block, 20 foot wide structure with Greek Revival facades on both Stone Street and on 19 South William Street. The new building consists of a restaurant space on the basement, first and second floor and three large, loft-style, full floor apartments above. For all purposes, it is a brand new building behind the restored façades with new steel joists and concrete slabs on metal deck floors as well as new state-of-the-art electrical and mechanical systems. The walls are secured to the party walls by large, exposed custom steel corner angles straps which are attached to the original brick walls and are an interesting architectural feature inside the apartments. The new facades have been restored as per the Landmarks Preservation Commission Guidelines for the Lower Manhattan Historic District. The project included extensive research to determine the original details and materials. The result is a building that returns to life and joins its neighbors to complete the urban and historic context on two separate streets.
